Chicago Theatre Review
That Old Fashioned Magic
Ryan Plunkett’s Old Fashioned Magic
Second only to comedy shows, I think magic shows might be the hardest thing to effectively review, and for the same reason. It’s really hard to talk about them in any detail without spoiling the surprise that both effective comedy and magic depend upon. So you’re just going to trust to me when I say that Chicago Magic Lounge’s newest show, Ryan Plunkett’s Old Fashioned Magic, is an absolute delight and you simply must see it as soon as possible.

I’m not one of those people who tries to figure out the magic trick. In this case, I enjoy being fooled, but honestly, I don’t think I could have figured these tricks out if I tried. All I will say, without giving too much away, is that I have seen plenty of magic where the magician moved their hands faster than I can see. It was a rare treat to see a trick executed where, as far I can tell, the magician didn’t move his hands at all.
One of things I can talk endlessly about without giving anything away is how much I love Chicago Magic Lounge. I’ve been several times over the years and always have an amazing time. Prior to the show, you can hang out at the bar and watch close-up magic. Once seated, a team of magicians circulate through the audience dazzling you while you order food and drinks, which are as good as the magic on display. The theater is full of memorabilia from more than a century of magic acts and it all contributes to what the Chicago Magic Lounge excels at – atmosphere.
I have never failed to be totally entertained at the Chicago Magic Lounge and Ryan Plunkett’s new show is no exception. From beginning to end, the entire experience is like stepping back in a time machine to the hey day of live magic and vaudeville. And if anyone has out-of-town guests this summer, this is at the top of the list for something that will impress your friends and family and something you will love as well.
Highly Recommended
